Nebraskans Have Little Spirit In Raising War Fodder—Old and New West Meet.
Alliance, Neb., June 16.—Nebraska horses will not continue to face a future as cannon food in Europe if present exacting demands of the British and Italians remain in force. That was the prediction at yesterday's meeting of the Nebraska Stock Growers' association. Steeds from this state, the ranchmen and big stock men say, are either too big for artillery horses or too small for even cavalry horses, and because there are virtually only two kinds of horses that will do for war Nebraskans here are glad they do not raise them to conform with specifications.
The old west and the new meet here in a revelation to both. The business side of the meeting was the annual conference of Nebraska stock growers and for good measure there was added the state sheriffs' semiannual gathering. The pleasures consisted of old time games of rope and riding—distant relic of the plains.
The executive committeemen of the association took up serious consideration of pressing problems. The most difficult, they averred, was that of following up cattle quarantines in various aspects and in the different states. Some emphatic recommendation is looked for when all the prominent growers now here have had their say.
Twenty counties are represented from Nebraska, and several South Dakota and Wyoming cattlemen are here also.
