Brother Soldiers,
I Take this Opportunity to inform you, that as we are going to embark against our perfidious Enemies, I expect that each of you will take particular Care to be always ready on every Occasion, to do your Duty cheerfully without Hesitation ; and from a Loyal Spirit, when we come upon Action, behave your Selves well, and obey the Orders of your Officers, and I ll. under GOD, warrant you Success.
We are going against a murderous, cruel, Blood thirsty Enemy ; who have for upwards of an Hundred Years been plotting and contriving how to disinherit us ; driving our Neighbours, our Relations, and our Families, from their Possessions; and have used them with the greatest Barbarities they could invent, even when under the strongest Ties of Treaties ; many of us here, nay all of us, have been great Sufferers by their Cruelties. Remember WILLIAM HENRY. What Massacres were made there, after a Capitulation, by these inhuman, Wretches ! Here the Brigadier was so full he could not speak, but turning to the Officers said ]
And I make no Doubt, Gentlemen, but that you will exert your selves at this Juncture that we may subdue our Enemies, and put an End to a long and tedious War, in these Parts of America.
His Majesty has been so good, as to assist us on every Occasion, to promote our Peace and Tranquility. The Regular Troops have willingly left their Country, and their Families; to assist us in this important Affair ; and have endured the Fatigues of several Campaigns to serve us ; and now let us exert ourselves to the utmost ; for should we from a dastardly Spirit, turn our Backs on our Enemies, we shall bring Shame on ourselves: Disgrace on our Country, and our Children now born, and theirs yet unborn, would be bound to Curse us. Therefore do your Duty cheerfully, put your Confidence in God and acquit yourselves like Men.
