Full Text

Extract of a letter from Washington.

"I have frequently had the pleasure since my arrival here of visiting and dining with Mr. Paine. Is not this horrible? He is an entertaining, civil and good-natured man. He abounds with anecdote, and knows more about the men and things of our revolution, than, perhaps, any other man in this country. Notwithstanding his age, he appears to have all the vigor of a mind of maturity, and a retention of memory truly extraordinary. The story of his intemperance is indeed federal, and is as correct as that the feds are honest men and republicans."
