Full Text
Thirteen cases of drunkenness were disposed of in the usual manner, by fine or commitment to the work-house to labor for the good of the city at 75 cents per day.
P. M. McLaughlin, Thomas Lawrence and Dennis Jones, colored, were arrested for drunkenness and disorderly conduct. The two first were each fined five dollars, but as Jones' case was more serious it was investigated. Dennis got drunk and went to beating a negro woman for amusement. Her remonstrances irritated him and he drew a pistol threatening to send her post haste to the happy land of Canaan. For this, Dennis was fined fifty dollars, and as he had not the money he will serve the corporation for the next seventy-five days.
Gus Wilson, well known to our fast young men, was arrested for tippling without a license, in three cases. For some reason, want of proof, sympathy, or something else, Gus was let off with the payment of costs in each case.
John Quin was arrested for tippling on Sunday. There were three cases against Quin but the proof was wanting. Quin was discharged.
Mr. Raney was fined three dollars for obstructing the pavement by tying his horse in such a way as to incommode passers-by.
Fred Buckhorn, charged with disorderly conduct, was discharged.
Betty Conn was arrested for stealing a dress and bonnet, and as the proof was conclusive, was sent to the work-house till further orders. There at least, Betty will remain sober.
