COMPETITIVE PLANS

State Superintendent Baxter has sent out details concerning the conditions of competition for furnishing the State with plans and specifications for school buildings, under a law passed at the last session of the Legislature. The plans submitted must be for buildings that will cost from $600 to $3,000. A commission consisting of Superintendent Henry M. Maxon, of Plainfield; Architects Maurice Fornachon, of Ridgewood, and George B. Post, of Bernardsville, will determine the relative value of the plans received and the right is reserved to reject all plans not submitted in accordance with the conditions.

All drawings must be delivered flat (not rolled.) unmounted, on tracing cloth, express prepaid, to the Department of Public Instruction, Trenton, N. J., on or before November 1st, 1898, and signed by a non de plume. The names of the authors of successful designs will appear upon the accepted plans after the awards are made.

Non de plume and real name of competitor must be sent in a sealed envelope to the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Type-written specifications suitable for builders and contractors must be furnished and accompanied by a bona fide estimate of cost from a responsible builder.

The prizes offered in lieu of regular architects' commission will be as follows: One room building, $55, $45 and $35. and special commendation; two-room building, $100, $85 and $70, and special commendation.

Owing to the small appropriation made for carrying into effect the provisions of the act. it is deemed advisable to invite competition among architects whose places of business or residence is in this State. for the furnishing of plans and specifications for one-story, frame or brick. one and two-room buildings only.

Each school-room is to have a seating capacity of fifty single desks; also to have an adjacent cloak-room and convenient closet or "built-in" case for school library and supplies. The cost of one-room buildings is to range from $600 to $1,500 and of two-room buildings from $1,600 to $3,000.

Plans must be given in drawings of all floors, front and side elevations, one transverse section, and such detail drawings as will enable the contractor to properly construct the building.

All drawings must be rendered in line. in India ink, on sheets of uniform size (21x27). without shades or shadows, except that walls may be blackened in; must be made to the uniform scale of one-fourth inch to the foot. and must also include the most approved and feasible methods of heating, lighting and ventilation, Scale plan to be given on each separate sheet.
