Too Proud To Work.

A lady friend of ours living near Smithfield, desirous of hiring a cook, and preferring a colored servant, was informed that it was very possible she might be able to get one by inquiring at the old warehouse on Commerce street, which of late has been turned into a tenement institution.

"A girl named Lovy was sent for to come and see the lady. Lovy made her appearance, munching a piece of corn dodger, dry as saw-dust. Her wardrobe was exceedingly limited and very stringy, and the lady naturally supposed that' if it was any body in the world that did want work that person was Lovy. Oh! no, she would not go to Smithfield, dat was in de country, she warn't gwine dar. no how : and sides dat she wood make no engagements till after Christmas. We thought-well.
