A meeting of the Board of School Trustees
was held last night at which were present a
number of our prominent and substantial citi-
zens, who were in attendance on account of
their interest in the little Kindergarteners and
their school. Of this number were Messrs.
Jacob Tobriner, Chas Harris, P. A. Wagner,
B. F. Foster, T. Coffin, J. F. Farrell, W. H.
Bryant, County Superintendent Greenlaw,
and State Superintendent Sessions.
Three
separate petitions with a goodly number of
signers were presented to the Board, asking
that the Kindergarten school be reopened.
Mr. Coffin stated to the Trustees that Supt.
Greenlaw informed him there is now on hand
in the school fund of the county $2,865; that
$3,090 would be required to pay the whole ex-
penses of the schools, Kindergarten included.
The small balance the gentlemen agreed to
cash and wait for their pay until money should
be received into the Treasury. Mr. Coffin
farther stated that the State apportionment,
coming in June 10, and the Fall taxes will en-
able the schools to be reopened in better
plight than ever before in the history of Car-
son.
At the reopening, September 1st, there
will be on hand and accruing the sum, in gross,
of $10,800, independent of some small sources
of revenue from which the aggregate will be
raised several hundred dollars. The estimated
expense of conducting the schools, for the
year of ten months, is about $11,000.
Mr. Linn, member of the Board, remarked
that he had voted to discontinue the Kinder-
garten school because he thought they could
not continue it and pay expenses of certain
necessary repairs to the Central School build-
ing, and that he was not yet sufficiently satis-
fied of the contrary to change his mind.
Here the general discussion of finances
opened; the gentlemen patrons of the Kinder-
garten brought forward facts and figures to
show that there is no apprehension of stint in
any quarter. Mr. Robinson stated, summing up
a great deal in a few words, it seemed clear to
him that the Kindergarten school can be con-
tinued. The Board adjourned till Friday
evening in order to have time to consider the
suggestions offered them.
