Fifth and sixth graders at the North End school selected their 1949 school patrol from those two grades through nomination and a secret ballot. The three officers of the patrol for the year were also chosen as follows: Captain, Tony Baker; 1st Lieutenant, John Berry; 2nd Lieutenant, Paula Bibler.
Each week the officers and patrolmen meet with their sponsors, Mrs. Ruth Lynch and Mrs. Hazel Heller. There are four substitute patrolmen.
Articles on how best to improve their safety patrol were written by the children of the 5th and 6th grades. Excerpts from the best articles have been combined by the class with the help of their teacher, Mrs. Phyllis Dickey, follow:
"During the school year of 1948 and 1949, the pupils and teachers became conscious of the patrol force taking advantage of their position. This led to a unit on safety. We made a careful study about the attitudes of patrolmen and children, the duties of the patrol, and characteristics of a good patrolman.
At the close of this study the children of the 5th and 6th grades nominated children in their groups for the patrol. These names were voted on by the children. The patrol force at the close of the year showed great progress.
At the beginning of this school year we had a temporary patrol until we became organized. We nominated our patrol as we did last year, but we voted by secret ballot.
It is the patrol's duty to make our schoolday safe. To do this the patrol needs the cooperation of the parents. The patrol is working for a safe school year. Let's all cooperate."
