The editors of the Hartford (Con.) Mercury, one of the oldest and most substantial Republican papers in the country, who have heretofore taken no part in the discussions relative to the Presidential Candidates, in their paper of the 9th inst. after speaking of the late minority caucus, in terms of decided reprehension further observe "for ourselves we are free to declare we will not receive or support such a nomination, as the will of the republican party--But shall consider it in its true character-that is, as an individual nomination; and so far at least as respects the nomination of Mr. Crawford, for President, as we do not believe him to be the most suitable man for that office, shall oppose his election. Having told our patrons whom we shall not support, we will now inform them frankly and explicitly who we shall support. At the request of a great number of our patrons and in accordance with our own opinion, we shall support
JOHN QUINCY ADAMS,
for President. His integrity, splendid talents, experience, and faithful services, in the various stations and offices which he has been called to fill in the government, entitle him to our warmest approbation and respect; and we shall therefore use all honorable means to promote his election to the Chief Magistracy of the Nation."
