From the Canton Advocate we learn that F. A. Gale, President of the Bank of Kimball, was elected Mayor of Canton on the 7th inst. The Advocate has to say of the city election:
"No opposition manifested itself as to the head of the ticket, and F. A. Gale received almost unanimous complimentary vote for the mayorality of Canton city, a feature entirely new to Canton political circles where contention for honored offices always predominates.
The evening of election day was spent in a manner characteristic of occasions of like order. Open-house seemed to be the rule on Main and Fifth streets, where cigar cases were thrown open to the public at the expense of Mayor Gale, and where his general good health was "smoked to."
The First National Bank building was temporarily transferred into banqueting-rooms, where all the dainties and elegancies to be secured were spread out to regale one's self with. The visitors were many, and congratulations were showered upon Mr. Gale for the very successful culmination of the citizens movement for placing him at the head of the city government. During the evening the Gate City Band repaired to the residence of Mayor Gale, and after successfully rendering a popular air were invited into the parlors, where the hospitality of the host and hostess was equalled only by the appreciative manner in which the boys feasted on the luxurious variety of banquetable dainties set before them. In reply to a vote of thanks extended by the boys for their hospitable reception Mr. Gale thanked those present, in a neat speech, for their impromptu ovation, and promised to do nothing but what would meet with the entire approbation of his constituents, winding up with the presentation of two boxes of choice havanas to the band members."
