Full Text

When the Indian Appropriation bill was under discussion in the Senate, on Tuesday, Mr. Crittenden remarked that our whole Indian policy had proved a failure, and sufficiently indicated that Congress had mistaken the true means for attaining the beneficent ends it had proposed. The expense attending our intercourse with the Indians had reached a frightful amount—being greater than that of the whole General Government in the early days of the Republic; and Mr. Cass also spoke briefly on the subject of our Indian relations, which he thought constituted a difficult moral problem for the solution of the American people. The Indian's repugnance to all manual labor seemed to interpose an insuperable obstacle to his civilizing.
