Ship Destruction
"Just Beginning"
By MORRIS LANDSBERG
GUAM, Aug. 1--(AP) Combined carrier and landbased plane attacks have cost Japan, by conservative official accounts, at least 1,546 ships and small craft sunk or damaged in her home waters in July and more than thirteen hundred warplanes destroyed or wrecked-but that is just the beginning.
Admiral Halsey's Third Fleet, carrier planes, including some two hundred fifty British aircraft alone destroyed or damaged 1,035 Japanese ships and small craft in twenty-one days of almost ceaseless assaults with torpedoes, bombs, rockets and fifty calibre bullets.
They accounted for one thousand two hundred seventy-eight aircraft, most of which was caught on the ground. Halsey's units have reduced the remnants of the Japanese fleet to a shambles 99 warships have been sunk or damaged, including three disclosed today by land-based aircraft.
Admiral Nimitz' Command sank another 85 vessels, mostly freighters and cargo ships and damaged one hundred seventy-six destroyed or damaged fifty-three Japanese planes.
An Associated Press tabulation showed the Far East Airforces have immobilized two hundred fifty Japanese ships or small craft totaling two hundred fifty thousand tons after they began operations July. General MacArthur's command coming from Okinawa bases early in the month said the totals include many barges, luggers and other small craft, but exclude many.
The communique reports of "several" or "a number of" vessels sunk or damaged also exclude the number of Japanese planes wrecked by B-29s or accompanying Mustangs.
The figures which are not available for July are just the pre-invasion beginning of the devastation to be wrought on Japan, who has been warned by nearly every Pacific commander.
Radio Tokyo said Admiral Halsey's fleet still prowled off Honshu island, where it already has spent twenty-two unchallenged days.
