Columbus Zoo Expects
Largest Crowds Ever

"The Columbus Zoo is planning
to entertain the biggest crowd in
its history during 1953", says Arthur R. Allen, president of the
Ohio Federal Savings and Loan
Association and General Chairman
of the 1953 Zoo Family Membership
Campaign. We expect more
than a million attendance this season.

Fifty thousand family memberships is the goal of the 1953 Drive
which gets under way on Saturday,
April 11th at 10 A.M. with a
gigantic Zoo Parade down town
Columbus.

The Columbus Zoo was founded
in 1927 in a six acre corral overlooking O'Shaughnessy Dam with
two reindeers. Today it occupies
ninety-three acres with a population of 1,700 wild animals, rare
birds and reptiles housed in twenty
major buildings and forty nine
outdoor exhibitions, pens
and
cages valued at more than a million dollars.

During the past three years the
Columbus Zoo has tripled in size
and among zoos in America the
Columbus Zoo has moved from
24th place to 8th place among
Zoological Gardens throughout the
country. During 1927 a $600,000.00
Building Program
was
started
which will be completed this year.
The $50,000.00 Giraffe House is
completed. The new $200,000.00
Aquarium is under construction.
A new annex has been added to
the Bird House and a huge cage
costing $4,000.00 will house the
largest
pheasant exhibition in
Ohio.

The 1953
Family
Membership
Campaign
gets
under
way
on
April 11th and continues until
Memorial Day when a big gala
official opening celebration will be
made. The membership remains at
$1.00 per family which entitles
two adults and all the children
under 12 years of age free plus
free parking for the family car
every time you want to go to the
Zoo in 1953.

"As an added inducement to attract more families to take advantage of our Zoo and to join with
the thousands of others who have
been members for years, this year
we are offering "Zoo extras" days
when "members only" will be admitted to the Zoo and everything
will be "on the house", free rides
on the Zoo Zephyr, our miniature
railroad, the scenic route that
covers the Zoo. Free "Hot Dogs"
and free "Cokes" for the entire
family. "Where else in the world
could you get so much for so
little?". continued Mr. Allen. "It's
just good citizenship to join the
Columbus Zoo today."
