Extract of a letter to the Editors of the Statesman, from Washington, dated April 24th, 1824.
"An adjournment is talked of by the 20th of next month; but should a full investigation of the subject of Mr. Edwards's memorial take place, it will not be possible for Congress to rise till some time in June, if so soon. Very different views are entertained in regard to a prosecution of the inquiry. Some of the members, it is said, declare that they will not remain a day after the other business of the session is finished, while others say they will not leave till the investigation has closed, should it be protracted till the 4th of July. The President has despatched several communications to Mr. Edwards, directed to him at different places; and these with the notification of the messenger of the House will doubtless hasten him back. It is reported that he is anxious the inquiry should be fully prosecuted.
The Auction Bill, not less important to the interests of the country, will be called up on Monday next. Its discussion will probably occupy but a short time, and its fate will be decided in a week or two at farthest. Memorials even at this late stage of the session continue to be presented in favour of the passage of the bill.
The foregoing subjects, together with the proposition to build an additional number of sloops of war, and some other matters relating to the Navy, constitute nearly all the business of an important publick character now before Congress. A multiplicity of private and local subjects will occupy most of the remainder of the session."
