Says He Paid Friend $200 to "Fix" License—Latter Thinks Advice Worth It.
John Hart, thirty-nine years old, who says he lives at No. 425 East 76th-st., was yesterday held in $1,000 bail by Magistrate Barlow in the Essex Market police court for examination on a charge of extortion made against him by Jacob Issecks, of No. 281 Madison-st.
The prisoner, according to the story told the court, pretended he could get the complainant a master plumber's license, providing he was willing to give up $200. Hart, it is alleged, declared he had a great "pull" with the Civil Service Commission and also with the Board of Examiners. The complainant gave him $100, he says, and in return the prisoner gave him a set of Civil Service questions to study.
Issecks spent several nights committing the questions to memory, and then informed Hart that he was ready for the examination. Hart, the complainant alleges, demanded $100 more. Issecks, as he was anxious to get a license, finally paid. Hart then gave him a letter to present to the Board of Examiners. Issecks, as soon as possible, presented the letter, which was immediately declared a "fake."
The prisoner said he did nothing more than many other persons were doing, and that he had a right to speak to the complainant about getting a license. The advice he gave to him, he said, was certainly worth at least the amount of money received.
