Speak Up--Pete White
Recently we had the occasion to bring to your attention the "whispering campaign" centered around Salem Crescents' Peter B. White, with respect to Golden Gloves monies, etc. At the time we said:
"Since my high school days, I have known Pete White, who is somewhere near my age, in his late forties. He was a school boy sprint hero of mine and I regret the rumors floating around local gymnasiums. I won't know how to tackle them until Mr. White replies to my letter sent to the Department of Sanitation where he is employed in a clerical capacity."
Since then in the March 26, 1949, issue of the New York Age, a writer, Leslie Matthews, who has a column on sports titled "Sport Time", wrote:
"Peter White is no longer director of the famous Salem Crescents. The former track star who has been connected with the organization since 1911, was voted out and replaced by Ben Wilson. Feeling has been running high between the instructors and White for a long time and it reached a climax last year when rumors circulated around town that the money given by the Golden Gloves to the Salem Crescents A.C. disappeared."
According to a source that we have not checked with too closely, Mr. White threatened to bar Bill Miller and Wilbur Walcott from the club. Old admirers are asking me questions I cannot honestly answer, Pete? I will devote half of my column to your side--can I do more?
