The foregoing from the Hernando Phoenix, is about as near the truth as that print usually gets. Why could it not tell its readers that Gen. Speight, Senator from the county of Lowndes, and the Senator from his County, both good anti-bond democrats, also voted against the suspension of the Constitutional rule, which prevented the Appropriation Bill from being taken up? The editor could not have been ignorant of this fact, for he was at Jackson during the session of the Legislature, endeavouring to get an appropriation for a notoriously exorbitant account for advertising tax sales, which he had made out against the State. We have already stated the reason alledged by the seven Senators for refusing to permit the appropriation Bill to come up for consideration, was that it was sent to the Senate on the last day of the session, and there was not sufficient time to examine its details before voting upon it.

Event Details
The Mississippi Legislature adjourned without passing the appropriation bill, which had passed the House but was defeated in the Senate by five Whig votes and opposition from seven senators, including anti-bond Democrats like Gen. Speight, who refused to suspend constitutional rules due to insufficient time to review the bill sent on the last day of the session. The Hernando Phoenix's report is criticized for omitting these Democratic votes.
