"ONE KILLED."
BY F. C. BIGELOW.

A young wife fair,
With golden hair,
Wipes the warm tears from out her eyes
And she alone,
Makes sob and moan
As husband to the battle hies.

Tidings are brought
Of battle fought
In hostile Georgia's plains afar,
The loss was slight,
And vanquish'd quite
Was th' enemy in fields of war.

A Captain, who
Wrote home in glee,
"My company has lost but one,
His bones not left
Upon the crest
Of hill where the fight had begun."

His comrades, torn
In one short morn—
Forgot the very name he bore,
But a wife fair,
With golden hair,
Shall now lament him ever more!
