"What could be more appropriate in keeping with the finest traditions of our organization, than having Igloo No. 1 of Nome hosting the Grand Igloo Convention of the Pioneers of Alaska in this first year of Alaska statehood," stated Gov. William A. Egan this morning when addressing the Pioneer Convention at its opening session. He reviewed how the organizers met in Nome and in their very first initiatory work set out the principles of the order to be "to preserve the history and relics for the future state." Egan reviewed the accomplishments of the 49th state which has now operated for ten months, showing how all 12 branches of the government are progressing admirably and favorably. He praised the Pioneers for the faith they had and the principle they upheld and expressed the need for their continued efforts. The Ketchikan Band played the national anthem and sang the Alaska Flag Song. Colors were presented by members of Explorer Scout Troop 766. President of Igloo No. 1, Russ Hermann, introduced Mayor Steffen Andersen, who extended a cordial welcome to the delegates from all over the state. The delegates totalled over 200, the last of whom arrived during the opening ceremonies, from Juneau and Sitka. After the presentation of a Nome ivory gavel to Grand President Otto Koppen by Past Grand President M. J. Walsh, and presentation of distinguished Pioneer visitors and officers the meeting adjourned until this afternoon.
