Opponents of the big navy bill in the United States senate Wednesday blocked a move to hasten a vote on the measure. They followed this with an attack on the proposal for 45,000 ton super-dreadnaughts. Senator Vandenberg of Michigan, Republican, argued that a new international arms conference should be held, and proposed that an amendment to the measure to limit to 35,000 tons the size of three new battleships, and to delay a start on construction until after December 31, 1940. Vandenberg said the size limit had been raised from 35,000 tons to 45,000 tons due to the rumor that Japan has 45,000 ton vessels.
