Derby Street,
It is hoped and expected, that for this important office the best man in the county, for the place, will be selected. and that he will enter upon the discharge of his duties with a determination as well as a desire to realize the public expectation in the increased efficiency and usefulness of the public schools.
To properly educate all the children of the State year after year continuously, entails upon us as a State and as individuals, a great and increasing expense, but it is one of the necessary expenses attendant upon a refined and desired civilization-no man or woman can devote his, or her money to a better or more ennobling use--like the sunlight. the rain and the dew, it benefits us all. An educated community is a safe community to live in, an ignorant one is ever a dangerous one. Life and property are safe and protected in the one, while in the other. both are at the mercy of despotic ignorance and the brutality and lawlessness which from its very nature it creates.
The district school houses, nestled amid the rough hillsides and valleys of our mountain State, when used for the purposes intended, afford better protection to every citizen, for both life and property, than all the court houses and all the jails, and all the criminal laws of the State combined.
Let no one complain of the expense attendant upon the support of our common schools, or our higher institutions of learning-they are the very sheet anchor, as it were, not only of national and personal security, but of domestic happiness and peace.
