A Case Against a Georgia Postmaster Dismissed.
Macon, Ga., March 19.-United States Commissioner Erwin this morning dismissed the case against Calvin E. Jenkins, assistant postmaster of Dooling, Dooly county, who was charged with violating the postal laws. No evidence was taken. The case was dismissed on a technicality.
It seems that the government has instructed Postmaster Byrom at Byromville, Dooly county, to keep a monthly record of all letters that passed through the Byromville office from the Dooling office. Instead of Postmaster Byrom making the record himself, he entrusted the work to a clerk in his store, who was not the assistant postmaster and was not connected with the postoffice in any manner, and had no authority to keep the record. This clerk was not sworn as a witness in the case. In view of the foregoing, Commissioner Erwin dismissed the case against Jenkins. The alleged discrepancy in the count made by the postmaster at Byromville of cancelled letters from the Dooling office and the report rendered by Assistant Postmaster Jenkins of the Dooling office amounted to about $10 per month for several months.
