Weather Bureau Will Establish One at Saltair.
The water gauge at Garfield beach that for years has served to record the fluctuations of the lake level, was destroyed by the recent storm and Weather Observer R. J. Hyatt has received directions from the department at Washington to immediately establish a new and durable one at Saltair. The destruction of the old gauge has disclosed the fact that it was inaccurate, and all the readings taken on it are wrong. As a consequence an entirely new zero is to be established, level lines being run from Gilbert's old beach mark near Black Rock. The work is to commence in a few days, and it will require several days' work to get the new gauge in working order. The old gauge was a wooden affair, and in the recent storm it was torn out of the ground and floated away. This gauge was established west of Garfield Beach a number of years ago and readings were made from the geological survey gauge established on the pier of Garfield. It has been found that when the more recent gauge was set a mistake was made that threw the zero mark at least six inches off. Whether this was too low or too high is not known. As a consequence the readings that have been taken on the gauge are all a half foot out. It was also found that the gauge at Saltair is a foot out. This has brought about a tangle in the readings of the lake that will require no small amount of figuring to straighten out.
