What is this article about?

Grouse, or Heath Hens, are rare birds found only at Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Island, commanding high prices. They disappeared after being numerous 20-30 years ago, unknown by 1818 when game laws passed, but reappeared recently though still rare due to out-of-season killing. Mr. Thaxter proposed extending partridge and quail protections to grouse.

GROUSE. The delicious bird, known by the name of Grouse or Heath Hen, rarely appears in our market, and commands an extravagant price,—from five to nine dollars a pair. They are found only at Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Island, where they were numerous some twenty or thirty years ago. After that time, they wholly disappeared, and, in the year 1818, when the Game Law was passed, they were unknown. They have, during the last two or three years, re-appeared, but are very rare, owing, in a great measure, to their being killed out of season. An order was introduced in the House yesterday, by Mr Thaxter of Martha's Vineyard, proposing that the laws for the protection of partridges and quails be made applicable to the grouse—Post. Pal.
