County Represented By Eight Seniors At Woman's College
In the class of 1948 students graduated Monday morning from The Woman's College was eight from Halifax county. In graduating exercises in Aycock auditorium speakers were Governor R. Gregg Cherry. Dr. Frank Porter Graham, president of the University of North Carolina: Dr. W. C. Jackson, chancellor; and Miss Betty Jane Sarratt, Brevard, representing the senior class. Governor Cherry presented diplomas to the graduates, on whom President Graham conferred degrees.
Misses Dorothy Miller Shields, Mildred Reade Rodgers, Lucy Dunn Elmore, Mary Christine Cherry, all of Scotland Neck; Martha Lenhart Alston, of Littleton, Jessie Wynns Gregory, of Halifax, Jane Taylor Thomason, of Roanoke Rapids, and William Roderick Cherry, of Hobgood, are the Halifax county graduates.
Miss Shields, received a bachelor of science degree in home economics, was listed with other honor students on the Dean's list, belonged to the chemistry club, home economics club, and Y. W. C. A. She served on the Y. W. C. A. cabinet her sophomore and senior year, was president of the freshman club and president of the home economics club.
An A. B. degree with a major in English was received by Miss Rodgers, who served as reporter, associate editor, columnist and photographer on the Carolinian, student newspaper, and as a member of the editorial staff and photographer of Coraddi, campus literary publication. She also was an honor roll student during her sophomore year, and belonged to the Masqueraders, Playlikers and Quill Club.
Miss Elmore, received an A. B. degree with a major in English. She belonged to the chemistry club during her senior year. She also belonged to the Adelphian society, medical technologists club and square circle, honorary math club.
Miss Cherry received a bachelor of science degree in physical education. She transferred to The Woman's College from Mars Hill. She belongs to the Aletheian society, camp counselors club and recreation association, and in athletic association sports and charge of softball her senior year and participated in gymnastics, hockey, soccer, speedball, tennis and volleyball.
Receiving a bachelor of science degree in home economics is Miss Alston. She is also a member of the Dikean society.
Miss Gregory, received an A. B. degree with a major in history and is listed with other honor students on the Dean's list: served on the Carolinian, student newspaper, as a reporter, was on the honor roll all four years, and belonged to the church council, Y. W. C. A., zoology field club, and square circle, honorary math club.
Miss Thomason was a member of the editorial staff of Coraddi, campus literary publication, the education club, International Relations club, Zoology field club, Y. W. C. A. and Tau Psi Omega, honorary french fraternity. She received an A. B. degree with a major in English and with other honor students she is on the Dean's list.
An A. B. degree with a major in English was received by Cherry. She served as president of the church council during her senior year, was listed with other honor students on the Dean's list, belonged to the International Relations club, Interfaith council, Physics club, and Square Circle, honorary math group. She was also named as one of eight outstanding seniors to appear in the
Woman's College yearbook and she is listed in Who's Who among college students in American colleges and universities.
