Plucky Phone Girls Stay at Posts While Fire Threatens

CHICAGO, March 12.—A storm sweeping the central section of the country killed 23, injured scores and did huge property damage. Twenty were killed at Pinson, Tenn., and three were killed at Richmond, Kentucky. Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan were hard hit when an 80 miles wind accompanied by snow, sleet and rain paralyzed traffic.
People Hurled About
Pedestrians were blown from their feet, thousands of theater goers here last night were caught by the storm, unable to return home. Hotels were crowded, many spent the night in cafes, lobbies and stalled automobiles.
During the height of the storm fire swept the two top floors of the Times building. Hundreds of telephone company operators in an adjacent building threatened by fire, stuck to their posts while firemen heroically subdued the gale swept flames.
The fire loss is estimated at approximately $100,000.
Losing Force
The storm passed over the Great Lakes today. Official weather observers predicted it will diminish going down St. Lawrence valley. Relief workers are searching the demolished homes in the vicinity of Jackson, Tenn. The injured were taken from Pinson. Many are reported to be still under the wreckage.
