Hard-bitten Jonathan M. Wainwright who succeeded General MacArthur as leader of the American-Filipino forces on Bataan peninsula is a staff officer who likes to lead his men on the battlefield. His comment on Japanese demand for surrender-
"No reply was necessary. None was made" is already a classic. These are some of the highlights in the career of the 59-year-old native of Walla Walla, Washington.
STRATEGY OF DEFENSE is worked out in the field on Bataan by Wainwright (left) and General MacArthur. Nicknamed "Skinny" since his West Point days. Wainwright advanced from major-general to lieutenant-general when he assumed command of the never-say-die forces on the Luzon peninsula.
