Full Text

The following is not the first intimation we have had of the distress and embarrassment under which the West India Islands are suffering from a depressed state of Commerce, and the limited demand for their produce: From Barbadoes we lately heard a similar account, which represented that Island to be in a most deplorable and ruinous condition. Yet we hear not a word from any of the Islands that can be construed into a wish for the repeal of our Navigation Act—It is therefore evident that they ascribe no share of their sufferings to the prohibitory measures of our government: which is a plain proof, that for any purpose of retaliation or coercion, those measures are wholly inefficient.

Antigua, May 29.—The House of Assembly have agreed to send a Memorial to his Majesty, on the distressed state of the Agriculture and Commerce of this Island, with a view of obtaining that relief so necessary to save persons interested in the property and affairs of this Island, and the Sister Colonies from impending ruin.
