Two young wives, Mrs. Flowers and 17-year-old Mrs. Jones, eloped from Hempstead Branch with schoolteacher George Hudson and carpenter Joshua Eustis, who abandoned their exemplary wives. The runaways fled to Albany via Brooklyn but were arrested at Rochester; the men were jailed on Long Island, Hudson having robbed his landlord, and Mrs. Eustis died of grief.
