Full Text

A journal of Rome indulges in a little bit of malice in announcing that Mazzini and Garibaldi will be prominent members of the new Italian Administration. It would be a blessed day for Italy and the surrounding nations, if these lifelong champions of liberty and humanity were to reap the reward of their strenuous labors, and preside over the destinies of the Italian Administration. But our Roman contemporary is well aware that Victor Emanuel is still the King of Italy, and that the people do not feel inclined to depose the dynasty which has won imperishable renown in the cause of Italian unity and glory. The King, however, is getting old and infirm, and it is not likely that monarchy will continue to exist beyond his life or his abdication. The era of republics is dawning, not only in Italy, but also in Spain and Portugal and Germany; and the accession to power of Mazzini and Garibaldi will probably take place much sooner than may be agreeable to their enemies.
