Republican County Convention

The Republican voters of this County met in convention in Millville on Thursday last and nominated candidates to be supported at the ensuing election.

The meeting was called to order by Col. J. Howard Willets, Chairman of last convention.

Dr. B. R. Bateman was afterwards elected permanent president.

On motion of J. W. Newlin, Esq., a committee of one from each township and ward was appointed on credentials. While the committee appointed by the chair were out, the chairman made some remarks in which he referred to the prosperity of the country since the election of Gen. Grant. The reduction of the National debt, the reconstruction of the States, and the fifteenth amendment were all referred to by the Speaker, who fully endorsed the action of the Republican party in all these measures. He cautioned the members of the convention against the apathy which evidently prevailed to some extent, and took occasion to say that he had always voted the whole ticket and hoped that whoever might be the candidates, that there would be no bolting.

Nominations were made for Sheriff, and the balloting resulted as follows:

FIRST BALLOT.
Enoch Hanthorn,
B. Trenchard.
E. W. Maylin,
David McBride,
Wallace Taylor,
Elwell Nichols,
J. E. Johnson,

The nomination of Enoch Hanthorn was then made unanimous.

The Convention then nominated by acclamation C. Henry Sheppard, of the first district, and William A. House, of the second as candidates for the assembly.

C. R. Wiley of Vineland, Edward Mack of Greenwich, and Isaac E. Johnson of Millville, were nominated for coroners.

It was decided to hold the next convention at Cedarville.

The convention was orderly, and largely attended from all parts of the county.
