RAIL ROAD. A letter from a citizen of Philadelphia, dated BELFAST, (Ireland,) October 19, 1830, says—"I see by the newspapers, that a Stevenson, the engineer of the Liverpool and Manchester Rail Way, has performed a most extraordinary feat. For a bet of 1000 guineas, he went from Liverpool to Manchester, 31 3/4 miles, in 33 minutes, on his locomotive engine! —this is nearly a mile per minute. When in Liverpool I was told the following curious fact: —A shop-keeper in Bond street received an order for some fringe of a particular colour, which was wanted for the fancy ball that night: he therefore put one of his boys on the rail-way car at 12 o'clock at noon, and ordered him to bring it back dyed, as early as possible from Manchester—the boy was actually in the shop by 4 o'clock, P. M., having been to Manchester, had the fringe dyed, and returned to Liverpool, all within four hours! Is this not wonderful! The two towns may be considered as one now."
