NEW COUNTY.
"Shall a new County be formed of the towns of Royalston, Winchendon, Athol, Templeton, Gardner, Westminster, Ashburnham, Fitchburg, Leominster, Lunenburg, Princeton, Hubbardston, Phillipston, Lancaster, Bolton, and Harvard from the County of Worcester; and the towns of Groton, Shirley, Pepperell, Ashby, and Townsend, from the County of Middlesex, prayed for in the petition of Ivers Jewett and others?"
This question is to be answered by the voters of this County and Middlesex at the April election. The reasons of the petitioners for desiring this new county are probably all embraced in a communication to which we give place to-day, in favour of the project. For ourselves, we do not conceive these reasons to be sound. We doubt very much whether the burdens complained of, if they be not entirely imaginary, will be lightened in any degree by the proposed change; and we cannot perceive that any other advantages will result from it; except it be the gratification which it will doubtless afford to a few office-seekers, and others who look to it for the promotion of schemes of self-aggrandizement. Our columns, however, are open to communications on either side of the question. The electors should act understandingly.
