"The Government of this country is now employed in evacuating the posts of Walnut Hill, and Natchez which will in all probability be delivered to the troops of the United States, by the first of April, by which time it is expected, that Governor Gayoso, will leave this, to begin running the boundary line, and its object once begun, he will name Mr. S. Minor, commissioner, in his place, and return here immediately.
"It is much to be wished, that the Executive of your country had framed a government of some kind, for the ceded territory, to take place immediately on its being surrendered. This event has long been expected, and it could not be supposed, that 5 or 6,000 people would suffer themselves to be ruled by military law, or subsist without the greatest anarchy and confusion, when unprotected by any other, and it is to be feared, from present appearances, that on the retreat of the Spaniards, scenes of violence, and perhaps bloodshed, may ensue; which can only be prevented by immediate attention on the part of the United States, to the wants and wishes, of the people and a very prudent conduct, on the part of the military, &c. &c."
