Believe Thugs Started Blaze Jewelry Store Valuables Saved

Burglars who turned to arson after committing their criminal acts were sought by city police Friday.

Radio Patrolmen J. W. Cody and T. H. Weaver, who investigated the fire which virtually wiped out the 170 Auburn Avenue Grocery of B. Mitchell, did considerable damage at the Holloway Jewelry Store next door and routed a score of persons from the McKay Hotel, located upstairs over the stores, said they found that someone had removed the bars from a rear window "sacked the place," then opened all the gas jets and lit them."

Damage to the stores was put at several thousand dollars.

Detectives Chester and Hilderbrand are investigating the fire.

Management of the Holloway Jewelry Store revealed that most of their repair work and jewelry was locked in a safe. Damage was confined to office equipment and fixtures.

Business will continue as usual.
