"Struck Ile."—On Thursday last the workmen engaged in drilling the artesian well at the east end of Main Street bridge struck a vein of clear, cold water, which when the pipe was put in, rose to a height of twelve feet above the level of the bridge. The well is fifty nine feet deep below the bed of the river, and is sunk through the solid limestone rock. From the bed of the river to the top of the bridge above is about twenty feet more, thus making the distance from the level of the bridge to the bottom of the well nearly eighty feet. To go below the turbid water of a river to sink a well in its rocky channel, and to bring up from below a stream of pure clear water to form a bubbling fountain above its surface; the doing of this at one time might have seemed like the mysterious work of enchantment, but now we see it accomplished without raising a mysterious conjecture in the mind of the most incredulous.

While the new artesian well was being sunk the well under Brook's confectionery store, and the one at Van Alstine's hotel suddenly ceased to flow, and have since refused to yield their liquid treasure as formerly. Mr. Van Alstine is now engaged in drilling his well deeper, hoping to reach a vein of water not yet tapped by the other wells.
