The Menomonees.

This tribe of Indians is about to be removed from the vicinity of Green Bay to its new home north of the Crow Wing river. A delegation consisting of the head chief and principal men of the nation—twelve in number—arrived here by the Lamartine yesterday evening. They are about to visit their new country for the purpose of locating their residences, selecting farming lands, &c. They are under charge of Mr. Bruce, their agent, Mr. Childs, of Green Bay and some other gentlemen. We make the following extract in regard to this tribe from Gov. Ramsey's report to the Commissioner of the Indian Affairs:

They number not over 2500, and are in the receipt of considerable annuities. They are probably a set of Chippewas, whose language they all speak; their 'secret language' referred to by some writers, is understood to be nothing more than a clipping of the Chippewa's words by a peculiar rolling of them on the tongue.

They have resided in the vicinity of Green Bay, without much change of location, for over two hundred years, within the knowledge of white men.

The early French travelers wrote their names 'Malomonies.' As a tribe, they are said to be much addicted to intemperance, with some fine exceptions. In one or two bands of the tribe, flattering progress has been made towards their civilization. On their removal to the head waters of the Mississippi, signal improvement in their morals and condition may be anticipated, as they will then be in a great measure removed from contact with bad and lawless whites.
