Emma Johnson Found Beside her Bed with her Neck and her Nose Broken.
Emma Johnson, aged 57, who lives apart from her husband, has for some time been boarding at Nathaniel Knapp's hotel in Rampopo avenue, opposite the Erie depot in Paterson. On Sunday night she went to bed, as far as is definitely known, as usual. Yesterday forenoon she was found at the side of her bed dead with her neck broken. The Coroner supposed that she had fallen out of bed, but to be sure he ordered a post-mortem examination, which was held yesterday afternoon. The doctors found her nose broken as well as her neck, and also found other injuries that seemed to show that the woman had been outrageously treated. The examining surgeons confided their suspicions to Coroner Hopson that the woman had been murdered. He will hold an inquest. In the meantime, deeming that there was sufficient evidence to warrant the suspicion of foul play, he caused warrants to issue for the arrest of the proprietor of the hotel and others who were there. They were to be arrested last night. Coroner Hopson and the doctors who made the autopsy have little doubt that the woman was murdered.
