Full Text

Extract of a Letter from a respectable gentleman in New-Jersey, to his correspondent in Philadelphia, dated Jan. 14.

We have nothing new worth communicating, except that one John Cox, a late democratic member of our legislature from Sussex county, is sentenced to five years imprisonment in the State prison, for passing counterfeit bank notes, for which he had given fifteen dollars a hundred, alleging that a man of his standing could pass them without suspicion. It is remarkable that he voted, in the legislature, for the passage of the law under which he is now so justly suffering.

First made the law, then broke it through,
Through,
Now feels the smart to justice due;
His labour still the state avails
Not making laws, but making nails.
