At 3 p. m., the Susan M. Key Literary society held an open session at which Rev. W. D. Bradfield made an address that was full of fine thoughts, eloquently expressed. At 8 p. m. the champion debate between the literary societies was held. Here was an instance of "Greek meeting Greek," and as a result, there was "a tug of war." It was an intellectual combat of a high order. The question was, "Resolved, That the Signs of the Times Indicate the Downfall of the American Republic." Messrs. Edwards and Spurlock represented the affirmative, and Messrs. Newton and Kiker the negative. Each debater showed great care and thoroughness in the study of the subject. The decision was given to the negative. Today at 10 a. m. the anniversary celebration of the Philosophian Literary society will take place; at 3 p. m. the anniversary celebration of the Atkinsonian Literary society, and a musical concert at 8 p. m.
