HOME OWNERSHIP FOR CITY GOVERNMENT
For more years than most women have birthdays, the El Centro city government has been like a permanent resident who spends his whole life paying rent for a home that is not quite up to his station in life. The city council has done admirable service during the last four years in encouraging El Centrans to own their own homes; yet for reasons of economy and lack of financing the city government itself has gone on renting its quarters.
All that is by way of being ended now. Up for consideration of ways and means is a plan to build a new city hall, for which the city will pay on a rent-like basis with ownership assured at the end of a comparatively short period of years. For starting the plan toward fruition, the city council is to be congratulated once again. It is to be hoped their efforts meet with success.
There are few communities as prosperous and modern as El Centro which do not have spacious quarters for the municipal government. It has been one subject of unpleasant comment by many visitors to this city that the city hall and appurtenant offices are housed in a rented building shared by business and other offices, and which was never intended in the first place for city hall purposes.
El Centro social and business activities have outgrown the pioneering stage. It is time the municipal offices followed the trend.
