Full Text

The Globe says, "There are a parcel of kind-hearted democratic editors, who, having their private benevolence appealed to, and being assured (by Mr. Henshaw himself, probably—at all events, by his adjunct of the Post, Mr. Greene) that he only took the place 'to subserve the cause of the true democracy,' were willing to give him a good word." As one of the 'parcel' of democratic editors who have approved of Mr. Henshaw's appointment, we can truly say that our "private benevolence" was never appealed to by any one on the subject. We heard of Mr. Henshaw's appointment before we saw it announced in any paper, and our article was written before we had read the remarks of any other person on that appointment. With Mr. Henshaw we have never had any conversation or correspondence on the matter. About a week after our article had been published, we had a few minutes conversation with Colonel Greene, but he stated to us no facts with which we were not previously acquainted. He made no appeal to our "private benevolence." We gave Mr. Henshaw our "good word," because we believed him to be a good man, and the attacks of a thousand Globes will never shake that opinion.—Concord Freeman.
