The Teneriff Affair.
Capt. Rich, commander of the Alert, which arrived on Saturday last, from Lisbon, contradicts in the most explicit manner, the statement given in the Chronicle, of Monday, as coming from him. He said nothing of the defeat of "British blood-hounds," for he is not in the habit of using such illiberal language. Neither did he say, "that out of 1400 sailors and soldiers landed at Teneriffe, not one was suffered to escape." Such a story is so absurd in itself that Capt. Rich wishes not to be considered as the author.
[This paragraph is inserted at Capt. Rich's particular request.]
Captain Rich confirms the account of the failure of Admiral Nelson's expedition to Teneriffe, but knows nothing of the loss of the Britannia, except that the Fox cutter was sunk. The object of the enterprize was the capture of four Spanish ships of the line lying there. But owing to accidents which often await military movements, the defense made by these ships, aided by the forts of the city, garrisoned by a strong body of troops; they were necessitated to abandon their object, and return to their stations at Cadiz and Lisbon.
Capt. R. further informs, that Adm. Jarvis continued the complete blockade of Cadiz, fearless of every attack from Don Manraco, and that he offered at any time, to furnish an escort to the American vessels bound to the Streights.
The Peace between Portugal and the French Republic, is also confirmed by Capt. Rich.
The Spanish ships captured by Admiral Jarvis, still lie at Lisbon.
"Some special good oft waits on ill."
It is asserted by those who know, that near three times the work has been done to the frigate by the same number of workmen, since the attempt to launch her, than would have been had she lain in the stream.
The advantage of the equinoxial tides, was the inducement to attempt placing her in her destined element, the 20th and 22d ult.
