Letters from Tunis of the 18th of August, represent the town of Bizerta, as reduced to a heap of ruins, the Venetian squadron having totally destroyed it by a severe bombardment which lasted till there was not a house left standing.

Such a havoc, it is added in that letter, seems to have had no effect on the Dey. Some of his courtiers representing to him in the liveliest colours the distress of those unfortunate inhabitants, and the death of so many brave and faithful officers—"So much the better," replied the Dey, with the utmost composure, "this bravado of Chevalier Emo will cost the Venetians a great number of ducats and zechins, in addition to those which I insist upon being paid by them to my treasury."
