Full Text

Indian War.—The last National Intelligencer contains an official account of an attack made by a party of Indians upon an American party, who were reconvoying the Mandan Chief to his nation, and compelling the Americans to return to St. Louis. The detail of this affair has occasioned some remarks from Mr. Mitchell in the senate.

We do not profess to be well acquainted with the topography of that part of the country, and we have not a map by us, but we presume this attack has been made by some Indians on the Missouri, or some of its branches. The Indians were of the Sioux and Ricara tribes or nations.

It is insinuated that some European nation is at the bottom of this business. As the Spaniards are neighbours to these Indians, they may be alluded to, but it would be indecorous to name them upon suspicion only. It is pleasing to observe how delicate and reserved our statesmen are in matters concerning Spain or France.
