Editor of The Argus:
The temperance meeting last night at the 9th Street M. E. church, was a success in every sense of the word. The house was crowded, seats all filled, standing room occupied, and a large number were obliged to go away not even being able to get standing room.
The speaker, the Hon. J. Q. Wing, held the audience as if by magic for one hour, at the close of which he recited a beautiful original poem, which was heartily received and applauded by all in the house.
The singing by the quartette of mixed voices added largely to the interest of the occasion, and showed a good deal of merit.
Then came the signing of the pledge and donning the blue ribbon, which was pinned upon a goodly number, by two young ladies appointed for the occasion.
These meetings are growing in interest, and everything that can be, is going to be done to have them continue so.
On account of an official meeting in the church, there will be no temperance meeting next Monday, but one week from next Monday you may look for another rousing time.
We are glad to see the city officers coming out on the side of temperance. Mr. Hull, the policeman, who signed the pledge one week ago, has kept that pledge inviolate, and says he will keep it as long as he lives. We believe he will make a good worker in the temperance cause, and prove a benefit to the city in its best interests.
