County-wide rumors concerning a write-in candidate for the Sheriff's race in the November 2 general election were squelched today when Deputy Sheriff Horace Long disclaimed any intentions of becoming a candidate.
Political conversations in all sections of the county have centered around the possibility of Long becoming a write-in candidate.
Sheriff Hugh Nance told a Tribune reporter today that "Long will definitely not seek the Sheriff's office."
Nance, in squelching the rumor, said, "Everyone connected with the Sheriff's department is a member of the Democratic party and none of them will offer any opposition to the Democratic nominee J. R. Pridgen."
Pridgen edged Nance in a runoff for the Sheriff's office after the regular Democratic Primary.
Winning the nomination in the Democratic Primary is tantamount to election in Columbus County.
