ART GRAY FOR 35 YEARS
RAILROAD SERVICE
Arthur Gray, roundhouse foreman in Seward, received a gold switch key encrusted with nuggets, as an award for 35 years of uninterrupted service with The Alaska Railroad. The presentation was made by Col. J. P. Johnson in a little ceremony here Wednesday night. M. T. Hughes, master mechanic, ARR, and Mrs. Gray were present with other railroad officials and Seward guests.
Art Gray is one of two employees remaining on the railroad who began work even before it became The Alaska Railroad.
Mr. Gray's father and he started with the old Alaska Central Railroad when it was built in Seward, and he remained to work for the new ARR. He carries a brass switchkey that is marked "property of the United States Railroad." The gold key is very beautiful. It was especially made, regular size, but the eye is encrusted on both sides with gold nuggets. The shank is engraved with his name, ARR and dates.
Although he started in 1916 with the line here, Mr. Gray served at Curry from 1926 to 1944, when he returned to Seward and has been here ever since. "He has an enviable record," Col. Johnson said when presenting the award.
