The modern gas-fired steam heating system now operating in the Wigwam apartments, which are open for inspection today, was designed and installed by the Shepherd Heating Company.
Two young Atlanta Negro engineers, John B. Shepherd and James S. Braxton, were responsible for its design and installation. Mr. Shepherd is a graduate of Tuskegee and Chicago Tech. Mr. Braxton received his M.E. degree from Stevens Institute of Technology.
They are in charge of the Atlanta University Power Plant, built over three years ago at a cost of over $300,000. Mr. Shepherd is chief engineer.
The heating of the apartments is controlled by a new and ingenious device. The amount of heat sent up from the boiler is controlled by the outside temperature, so that a drop in the outside temperature will increase the length of time the gas boiler operates.
The Shepherd Heating Company has designed and installed all types of heating systems in many buildings in Atlanta. Among these are Wheat Street Baptist Church, Prince Hall Masonic Temple, the residence of Mr. T. M. Alexander and many others.
