"Democracy In Illinois.-We are pleased to learn from the St. Louis Republican that at a democratic district convention just held at Springfield, Illinois, Major Thomas L. Harris was nominated for Congress in the sixth district. Resolutions were adopted affirming the old landmarks of the democracy, and endorsing the recent action of Congress relative to the Territories of Nebraska and Kansas.
Major Harris is the man who killed off Judge Logan in the old Hardin district in 1848, beating down a whig majority of 1,200. His course in Congress was unexceptionable. He was found a firm and true friend to the compromises and the constitution. His nomination now proves that the Nebraska-Kansas clamor has not abolitionized the democratic party in the Prairie State. The South want just such men as Harris to guaranty impartial legislation in Congress. We see the convention had some of the able heads of the party in Illinois in its organization-such as Murray McConnel, Colonel McClernand, and J. M. Palmer. We wish the party of that district every success; and who can doubt of its success with such a leader as Harris? He will cut his way through the chapparel to the summit, and capture the batteries of the opposition with as much ease as he ascended the heights of Cerro Gordo with his deadly artillery to beat down a foreign foe."
